Overview On Violent Sleep Disorders And Its Risks

There are so many types of sleep disorders, and most of them are quite common in every family. It is normally the adult like the parents and grandparents who shows sleep disorders like snoring, apnea, insomnia, etc. These conditions may be simple and tolerable for some but it may be a sign for some health problems.

Although disorders are quite common in adults, kids can still experience several types of sleep disorders. The most common case for this condition among kids is nocturnal enuresis, or bedwetting. This condition usually happens during NREM of Non-Rapid Eye Movement during sleep. Other conditions that kids can exhibit are sleep talking and sleep walking. This condition also happens during NREM.

Most kids feel scared when their alone in their room at night, this leads them to imagine things that will make them feel more scared. Also, bad experience, memories and trauma can cause kids to have sleep disorders like night terrors. Night terrors are characterized by screams, feeling terrified and confused awakening. This behavior however, does not directly suggest that the child has some serious neurological or behavioral condition. Those kids who usually suffer from night terrors usually outgrow that condition in their puberty. Sleep walking and sleep taking however, can persist until adulthood.

Most sleep conditions may not really impose serious harm as it happens. However, there are some sleep disorders that can cause harm not only to the person showing the disorder but to the people near him or her as he or she sleeps. These are violent sleep disorders which usually occur during REM or Rapid Eye Movement during sleep. This condition is characterized by random punching, kicking and even standing up and running from bed while still asleep. This can be quite dangerous if the person suffering from this condition has no company as he or she sleeps, especially if the room is full of fragile and dangerous materials that can hurt the person.

The diagnosis for this condition is quite new for medical science. In 1986, the suspected reason for developing this kind of condition is linked in some types of neurological condition.

A research from Dr. Bradley Boeve, a neurologist from Mayo Clinic shows that there is a “Correlation between extreme sleep disorder and eventual condition such as parkinson’s disease and/or dementia.” His study shows that most violent sleep condition usually go undiagnosed as most of the people who suffer from this condition are older male who usually sleep alone and has no one to watch over. Dr. Boeve also concludes that this type of sleep disorder can be identified through REM.

Most people who suffer from disorders in REM are men over 50 years of age; however, there is a small percentage of patients who are younger than 40 years old who suffer from the same condition. Study shows that 80% of those who use antidepressant drugs suffer violent sleep conditions. Though there has been a study that proves antidepressant’s effect in REM, there is no clear evidence that can explain that it is really the primary triggering cause of REM.

Treatment for such condition usually varies from severity of the condition. However, making the sleeping environment more conducive for a sound and comfortable sleep are proven to prevent sleep deprivation and quality sleep.
